PVC Coated Fabric and Tarpaulin: the Lowest-Cost Waterproof Bag Material
PVC-coated polyester - tarpaulin when heavy - is a polyester scrim sealed on both sides with vinyl. It is completely waterproof, wipes clean, welds easily and costs a fraction of TPU. Courier bags, tool bags and truck-tarp-style messengers are built from it.

Where pvc wins - and where it does not
Strengths
- Lowest-cost fully waterproof fabric
- Wipe-clean, resists oil and dirt
- Welds and sews easily; widely available
- Very high abrasion resistance at 650-900 gsm
- Glossy tarp look is a style in itself for courier and urban bags
Watch out
- Stiffens and can crack below 0 C - not for winter markets
- Not favoured by EU retail: chlorine content, phthalate concerns; specify phthalate-free grade
- Heavy - 650 gsm tarpaulin is more than twice the weight of 600D polyester
- Softens and can smell in car-boot heat above 60 C
Coatings and finishes for pvc
The back-coating or finish decides water resistance, cold-weather behaviour and, often, whether the bag passes EU retail requirements. Cost is relative to the uncoated base fabric.
