Jute - burlap in the US, hessian in the UK - is a coarse plant fibre woven into a rustic, open cloth. It is biodegradable, cheap and unmistakably "eco", which is why supermarket chains and wine merchants have made it the default reusable bag.

Coatings and finishes for jute
The back-coating or finish decides water resistance, cold-weather behaviour and, often, whether the bag passes EU retail requirements. Cost is relative to the uncoated base fabric.
