Nylon Fabric for Bags: 420D, 1000D and Ripstop, Stronger per Gram than Polyester
When weight and tear strength matter more than cost, nylon replaces polyester. Nylon 6 and 6.6 yarns have higher tenacity and elongation, so a 420D nylon body can outlast a 600D polyester one while weighing less - which is why hiking, tactical and premium business packs specify it.

Where nylon wins - and where it does not
Strengths
- Higher tear and abrasion strength than polyester at equal denier
- 20-30% lighter than polyester for the same strength
- Softer, quieter hand with a subtle sheen that reads premium
- Ripstop grid arrests punctures - essential for ultralight packs
- Takes IR-compliant and solution-dyed colours for tactical programmes
Watch out
- 20-40% dearer than polyester
- Absorbs more water uncoated; always specify PU or silicone
- Lower UV stability than polyester - dark colours fade faster in desert sun without UV-stable dye
- Sublimation printing not possible; screen and heat-transfer only
Coatings and finishes for nylon
The back-coating or finish decides water resistance, cold-weather behaviour and, often, whether the bag passes EU retail requirements. Cost is relative to the uncoated base fabric.
